For Burgers: | |||

1 | small onion, finely chopped | ||

1/4 | cup | sweet pickle relish | |

1 | teaspoon | salt | |

1/4 | teaspoon | pepper | |

2 | Tablespoons | barbecue sauce | |

6 | slices | Provolone cheese | |

6 | hamburger buns | ||

For caramelized onions: | |||
2 | Tablespoons | butter | |
|
|||
2 | large onions, thinly sliced and separated into rings | ||
|
|||
2 | Tablespoons | brown sugar | |
|
Preheat grill.
Mix beef, chopped onion, relish, salt and pepper and shape into 6 patties; brush with barbecue sauce. Grill patties to desired doneness placing a slice of cheese on top of each pattie and melting just before removing from the grill. Top with caramelized onions and place on buns.
To prepare onions (ahead of time or while burgers are cooking):
Melt butter in 10-inch skillet over medium high heat. Cook sliced onion in butter 8 to 9 minutes, stirring frequently, until transparent.
Stir in brown sugar and cook about 5 minutes, stirring frequently until onions are caramel colored and liquid is absorbed. Serve on beef patties.
